How Long Is an Industrial Robot's Warranty, Really? By Brand
Six manufacturers' own current terms documents all land on 12 months, so the number is not the story. What differs by brand is what starts the clock and whether there is a ceiling — and FANUC's own sales terms contain a warranty figure that is easy to misread if you stop at a search summary instead of the clause.
Every industrial robot brand advertises that it stands behind its equipment, and almost none of them put a number on a product page. The number lives in a sales-terms PDF or an installation-manual appendix that a buyer only reads after signing, and the aggregator posts that currently rank for “robot warranty length” cover cobots only — Universal Robots, Dobot, the smaller collaborative names — with no ABB, no KUKA, no FANUC, and no large industrial arm anywhere in the comparison.
We read six manufacturers’ own current terms documents directly, not a summary of them. The headline is almost anticlimactic: every one of them lands on 12 months. That is not a contrarian finding, and this piece will not pretend it is. The real variance, and the part that actually changes what a buyer is covered for, is what starts the 12-month clock and whether there is a ceiling on how long a robot can sit in a warehouse before installation still counts as new.
What each manufacturer’s own document actually says
Our robot database carries no warranty field — this is not something manufacturers publish per model, it is a term set at the level of the sales contract or the regional entity. Every figure below comes from a document we opened and read ourselves, cited by name, not reused from an aggregator or a search-tool paraphrase.

The FANUC clause that a search summary gets wrong
FANUC America’s current Sales Terms and Conditions PDF states its Section 6 warranty period in four lettered clauses, and two of them use very different numbers for very different products:
“(a) for robotic equipment, ROBODRILL, ROBONANO, spare parts (excluding consumable parts), and repaired or replacement parts, one (1) year from delivery; … (c) for CNC systems and Fiber Lasers, twenty-four (24) months from the date of startup … or up to a maximum of thirty-six (36) months from the date shipped.”
Robotic equipment is clause (a): one year, period, from delivery. The 24-month figure two clauses later belongs to CNC systems and Fiber Lasers, a different FANUC product line entirely, in the same document. Ask a search engine to summarize this PDF and there is a real chance it hands back “24 months” without naming the clause — the number is technically present in the document, just attached to the wrong product. Read the lettered clause before publishing or quoting a FANUC warranty figure from anywhere other than the primary document.
The clock-start problem: delivery, first use, and the gap between them
A robot does not always start working the day it arrives. It clears customs, sits in a distributor’s staging area, waits on a controller cabinet backordered from a different supplier, or gets installed weeks after a rescheduled line changeover. Whether that dwell time eats into the warranty depends entirely on what triggers the clock, and the six documents we read split into two structures.
Four brands measure from something close to delivery itself and state no separate cap: FANUC’s robotic-equipment clause runs from delivery with no installation trigger at all. The KUKA Robotics Hungária Kft general terms state the warranty runs “12 months as of the transfer of risk of danger” — legal language for the point risk passes to the buyer, which in practice tracks delivery. Doosan’s own Installation Manual states plainly that “the warranty period is 1 year starting from the date when the robot was installed” and states no separate shipment-based ceiling anywhere in that section.
Two brands measure from entry into service, but cap it against shipment: Universal Robots’ manual states the warranty runs 12 months from entry into service, “with a maximum of 15 months from shipment.” Dobot’s official after-sales policy uses the identical structure in near-identical language: 12 months from entry into service, capped at 15 months from shipment. ABB’s General Terms and Conditions of Sale use the same shape with different numbers — 12 months from installation or first use, or 18 months from date of shipment readiness, “whichever occurs first.”
The dual-clock structure exists to protect the seller: without a shipment-date ceiling, a robot that never gets commissioned could theoretically carry an open-ended warranty exposure. Doosan’s and KUKA’s documents, read as written, do not state that ceiling — which is worth knowing if a robot is going to sit uninstalled for an extended period, though it is not proof no such cap exists anywhere in either company’s broader contract stack for a given purchase order. Ask the seller directly for a robot that will have a long gap between delivery and commissioning; do not assume either structure from the brand name alone.
What this doesn’t tell you
Two honest gaps. First, KUKA’s current global warranty terms were not straightforward to locate: the PDF link referenced by KUKA’s own general-terms pages currently redirects to a generic download-center landing page rather than the document itself, and the version we were able to read — KUKA Robotics Hungária Kft’s General Terms and Conditions of Supply and Service, dated 2017 — is a specific regional entity’s terms, retrieved via web archive rather than KUKA’s live site. It states the same 12-month figure the other five brands converge on, but treat it as the best publicly available primary source for KUKA, not as confirmation of KUKA’s current global standard contract.
Second, none of these six documents promise free on-site labor for the full warranty term as a default. FANUC’s service-labor clause is a separate 90 days, shorter than its 12-month equipment clause. ABB’s Equipment warranty covers parts but assigns removal, reinstallation and transportation costs to the purchaser. If a quote doesn’t itemize labor coverage separately from parts coverage, ask — that gap is where extended-warranty and service-contract line items earn their price, a decision that sits alongside leasing vs. buying and a stocked spares plan in the same total-cost conversation.
