IP Rating to NEMA: The Standard Crosswalk Has No Answer for 41% of Robots in Our Database

One enclosure maker's own crosswalk chart contradicts its own product page on what NEMA 4X equals in IP. And 142 of the 345 robots in our database that publish an IP rating - including every IP68 and IP69K washdown robot - carry a number that chart doesn't define at all.

Bud Industries publishes a NEMA-to-IP crosswalk table on its own site. That table lists NEMA 4 and 4X as equivalent to IP55. Three paragraphs down the same page, Bud Industries describes its own NBB Series enclosure - built and sold as NEMA 4X - and states it is “also rated IP66.” IP66 and IP55 are not the same protection level; IP66 requires surviving a powerful water jet, IP55 does not. One manufacturer, one page, two different answers for what NEMA 4X means in IP terms.

That is not a gotcha against Bud Industries specifically. It is the whole problem with converting between these two systems, made visible in one place. We checked what a NEMA-to-IP conversion actually gets a robot buyer, using the crosswalk table a North American enclosure vendor publishes and the IP ratings our own 400-robot database records. The chart only has an answer for two of the ten IP ratings robots in our database actually carry. Everything else, including every robot rated for steam washdown, falls outside it.

Why isn’t there a direct conversion?

NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) and IP (Ingress Protection, defined in IEC 60529) both grade an enclosure’s resistance to dust and water, but they test different things. Rittal’s own comparison page states the reason plainly: “Because the two systems are based on different variables, there’s no direct correlation or conversion between NEMA and IP ratings.” Rittal points to a specific example - NEMA specifies performance during icing conditions, and IP standards do not test for icing at all. NEMA also folds in corrosion resistance and, for some ratings, resistance to specific atmospheric gases; IP tests none of that. An enclosure can pass one system’s test and never have been evaluated against the other’s at all.

Bud Industries’ own explanation of its crosswalk table makes the same point from the test-method side: it notes that the IP66 test is “three minutes under a water jet at 100 kPA/100 liters per minute at a distance of a meter,” while the NEMA 4 test is “hose-directed water at 31 kPA/240 liters per minute from a 1-inch hose at a distance of three meters.” Similar intent, different pressure, different distance, different flow rate. A rating in one system is an approximation of the other, never a guarantee.

Two things stand out before a single robot spec enters the picture. First, three different NEMA types (3, 3S, and 13) all land on the identical IP54 code - a buyer converting IP54 back into a NEMA requirement gets three different possible answers from this one table, not one. Second, the table’s highest entry is IP67, reached from NEMA 6 and 6P. There is no NEMA row anywhere in this table for IP68 or IP69K, the two ratings that separately cover sustained immersion and high-pressure steam washdown.

Where robots in our database actually land

Of the 400 robots in the Industrial Robotics Hub database, 345 (86.3%) publish an arm IP rating. Here is how those 345 ratings match against the crosswalk table above:

Add it up and only 203 of 345 rated robots (58.8%) carry an IP number that shows up anywhere in this crosswalk table at all, and even that majority splits three ways once you try to turn IP54 back into a specific NEMA type. The other 142 robots (41.2%) - including every single IP65, IP66, IP68, and IP69K robot in the catalog - carry a rating this particular crosswalk simply does not address. That gap is not a small-sample artifact. IP65 alone, absent from the table entirely, is the third most common rating in our database.

The washdown-specific ratings are the sharpest version of the gap. Our own analysis of IP69K washdown robots found exactly two delta pickers in the database carrying that top tier - the ABB IRB 360 FlexPicker and FANUC’s M-3iA - plus the newer ABB IRB 6790 recorded at IP69. None of the three has a NEMA equivalent in this table to hand a North American panel spec or purchasing document. A buyer working from NEMA terminology, trying to write a matching cabinet or control-panel spec for a steam-washdown robot cell, cannot get there from this chart. They would need to go past the standard crosswalk entirely - to a NEMA 4X or 6P enclosure chosen on its own washdown-duty merits, not derived from the robot’s IP69K number.

Robots don’t carry a NEMA rating at all

One more gap worth stating directly: not one of the 400 robots in our database publishes a NEMA number in the first place. Every rated robot arm carries an IP rating, full stop. NEMA enters an integrated robot cell only through the parts a North American buyer specs separately - the control cabinet, the panel enclosure, sometimes the teach pendant housing - never the arm itself, and our own look at controller cabinets by brand found the same pattern one level down: every cabinet dimension and rating we could locate was published in IP, never NEMA. A buyer thinking in NEMA terms is translating the entire time, on every component of the cell, not just the arm.

What this means when you’re speccing a cell

If your purchasing documents, your panel shop, or your plant’s electrical standards are written in NEMA and the robot’s own datasheet is written in IP - which it always will be, per the finding above - three things follow from this data.

First, treat any NEMA number you assign to a robot’s IP rating as an approximation you chose, not a fact the manufacturer stated. The robot’s own spec sheet will never confirm it, because the robot was never tested against NEMA 250 in the first place.

Second, check whether your IP rating even appears in whatever crosswalk table you’re using before you trust the row. IP54 and IP67 are common enough that most tables cover them. IP65, IP66, IP68, and IP69K - a combined 41.2% of every rated robot in our database - often are not, and a table’s silence on a rating is not the same as that rating being unratable in NEMA terms; it usually just means nobody has published the row.

Third, for a washdown-duty cell specifically, do not derive the enclosure spec from the robot’s IP69K rating at all. Spec the control cabinet and panel to a NEMA 4X or 6P washdown standard on its own merits - the same standards food and pharma facilities already use for every other piece of stainless equipment on the line - rather than working backward through a chart that stops two rungs short of where the robot itself sits. That gap sits on top of a supply problem, not just a translation one: our look at food-industry robot readiness found only 1 in 4 food-tagged robots in our database actually carries a washdown-rated arm in the first place, so the NEMA conversion question often comes second to whether a washdown-capable model is even on the shortlist. Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct conversion between IP rating and NEMA rating? +

No, and the manufacturers that publish crosswalk tables say so themselves. Rittal's own comparison page states plainly that because IP and NEMA are 'based on different variables, there's no direct correlation or conversion between NEMA and IP ratings.' NEMA tests things IP does not test at all, including performance under icing conditions and resistance to specific corrosive atmospheres. The crosswalk tables that exist are approximate cross-references, not equivalence tables.

What NEMA rating is equivalent to IP67? +

NEMA 6 or 6P, per the crosswalk table published by enclosure maker Bud Industries. That is the only IP67 entry point in that table - there is no separate NEMA row for IP68 or IP69K, the two ratings above it.

What NEMA rating is equivalent to a robot rated IP69K for steam washdown? +

None, at least not in the standard vendor crosswalk table we checked. Bud Industries' own NEMA-to-IP table tops out at NEMA 6/6P mapping to IP67. IP68 and IP69K, the two ratings that cover sustained and high-pressure steam immersion, have no NEMA row at all. A buyer converting a washdown robot's IP69K rating into a NEMA spec for a control panel or enclosure has to go outside this chart entirely.

Do industrial robot arms carry a NEMA rating instead of an IP rating? +

No. Not one of the 400 robots in our own database publishes a NEMA number. Every rated robot arm in our catalog carries an IP rating only. NEMA ratings, where they show up in a robot cell at all, apply to the control cabinet or enclosure the integrator specs separately - not to the arm itself.
