Intel Study Finds a Robotics Readiness Gap, and Humanoid Doubt

Intel's 800-leader survey finds 60% expect a robot fleet within 5 years, only 40% have a workforce strategy, and 4 in 10 doubt humanoids will scale.

Six in 10 business leaders expect their organization to be running a fleet of robots within five years. Only four in 10 currently have a formal plan for managing a workforce that includes them. That 20-point gap between ambition and operational readiness is the headline finding of “The Robotics Readiness Gap,” an 800-leader study Intel commissioned in 2026 and published August 20 — and the report’s sharpest, most specific finding is one this desk’s readers will recognize as more useful than the humanoid headlines dominating the rest of the robotics press: the leaders surveyed are not betting on humanoids at all.

Intel built the study with consultancy Man Bites Dog, with fieldwork run by Coleman Parkes Research, across 800 senior business and IT leaders, robotics specialists, and government/healthcare officials at organizations with at least $500 million in annual revenue: 240 in the US, 160 in China, 130 in Japan, 120 in Germany, 95 in the UK, and 55 in South Korea, spanning retail, manufacturing, healthcare, smart cities, and defense. “This move from repetition to interaction is changing the role of robotics entirely,” writes John Healy, Intel’s vice president and general manager of its Industrial and Robotics Division, in the report’s foreword. “It also exposes an uncomfortable truth: most organizations are unprepared.”

Confidence outpaces preparedness — especially in defense

The gap isn’t uniform. Two-thirds of leaders (67%) say they’re confident their organization will be ready to manage a mixed human-robot workforce by 2030, and 74% believe workforce planning and robotics strategy will be inseparable by then. Broken down by sector, confidence and strategy diverge sharply: defense leaders report 94% confidence against just 46% with a formal strategy today, a 48-point gap — the widest of any sector — followed by smart cities (30 points), manufacturing (26 points: 70% vs. 44%), retail (25 points), and healthcare (22 points). Ownership is fragmented, too: 29% of leaders put it with their CTO, 18% their CIO, 16% their COO, and just 12% have dedicated robotics leadership at all.

The purpose-built robot beats the humanoid

This is the finding most directly relevant to IRH readers, and Intel gives it real weight in the report itself: “The robots expected to have the greatest impact over the next five years are not humanoids but purpose-built systems, from autonomous mobile robots and industrial arms to inspection robots, drones and autonomous vehicles.” Asked which robot type would matter most to their industry, leaders ranked autonomous mobile robots first at 20%, fixed industrial arms second at 14%, inspection and sensing robots at 11%, and drones and service robots at 10% each — while humanoids scored just 6%, tied with quadrupeds and behind exoskeletons (8%) and autonomous vehicles (8%).

Four in 10 leaders (40%) go further, saying humanoids will never be viable for mass deployment. The report frames that skepticism as economic, not just technical: humanoids remain “expensive, power-hungry and complex,” and 65% of leaders believe a robot’s form factor today is dictated by technology limitations rather than actual task need. What leaders want instead is boring reliability — 76% say workplace robots must run across multiple shifts without interruption, 70% say robots must understand and respond to spoken instructions, and 77% say reliability and performance matter more than what a robot looks like. As Intel’s Matthew Formica, senior director and global head of edge and physical AI product marketing, puts it: “Business leaders should spend less time asking when humanoids will arrive and more time asking where a robot could eliminate a bottleneck today. That’s where the real return on investment lies.”

The millisecond economy is forcing edge-AI spending now

Scaling a fleet, not just running a pilot, is a latency problem as much as a strategy problem. The report calls it “the millisecond economy”: 55% of leaders require decisions in 10-100 milliseconds for critical robotics applications, and another 23% need under 10 milliseconds — together, 78% need a decision inside 100ms, faster than the 100-400ms an average human blink takes, per the report’s own footnote. Only 18% can tolerate slower responses. That pressure is already reshaping spending: 42% of organizations have a defined and funded edge or on-device AI strategy today, and a further 39% are actively building one; the remaining 19% splits between 16% who’ve discussed a strategy without formalizing it and just 3% with none at all. “Robotics can’t scale on data-center models,” says Intel’s Nagesh Puppala, general manager for robotics. “Forcing too much compute into robots creates cost, power and battery challenges that don’t hold up in the real world. The future is edge-native AI: deciding what needs to run on the robot and what can stay on-prem or in the cloud.” It’s the same thesis behind NVIDIA’s entry-level Jetson Orin Nano 2 and AMD’s Ryzen AI X100 robotics partner push — compute vendors are already building toward the exact bottleneck this survey measures.

Safety: wanted globally, standardized rarely

Trust is the other scaling constraint. Sixty-eight percent of leaders believe clearer global safety standards would accelerate adoption, but only 37% currently have standardized global safety standards in place. Forty-two percent say cyber or data risk is actively blocking their organization from scaling robotics, and nearly half (48%) have already experienced a safety incident involving a deployed robot — even as three in 10 (31%) name safety as the area where robotics has delivered the most value. “When deploying robotics, safety must always be the first priority,” says Intel’s Aziz Safa, corporate vice president and general manager of Intel Foundry Automation. “This means looking beyond the robot itself and considering the entire operating environment, from the surrounding equipment and infrastructure to the people who share the workspace. Real robotics readiness is defined by the systems and safeguards that enable them to operate safely.” The report’s ranked list of blockers to scaling, in order: upfront capital investment, integration with existing systems, technical complexity, ongoing maintenance, and ROI uncertainty at the board level.
