IMTS Week: The Layer Around the Arm Was the News

IMTS 2026 was about the software and controllers around the arm, and each headline number came labeled: company-stated, milestone-gated or unfinished.

The news at IMTS 2026 was the layer around the arm, not a new class of arm. Universal Robots (UR) launched Gen 7 as one platform, Vention put an agentic-AI layer and a new controller over other companies’ robots, and Hirebotics added line tracking and a linear rail to cobots it already sells. Just as telling was how each number was labeled: several headline figures are company-stated, and the humanoid safety standard Agility points to is still being written. Last week’s recap asked what was proven and what was projection in robotics capital. This week the same question moved down to the product spec sheet.

The layer around the arm was the news

IMTS 2026 runs in Chicago through September 19, and the arm hardware announced there was modest. Universal Robots’ Gen 7 launch is the clearest case. It arrived as one platform: the PolyScope X operating system, the CB7 Core controller, a g-Series tool flange, the TP7 Core teach pendant and the SP7 Smart Panel, plus three arms, the UR10g-1750 (10 kg payload), UR17g-1300 (17 kg) and UR18g-950 (18 kg). Those arms join the e-Series and UR Series lineup rather than replacing it, the CB7 Core is built to run the existing arms too, and UR’s own UR30 stays the heaviest cobot in its catalog at 35 kg.

Vention’s MachineAgent follows the same logic from outside the arm. Vention is a Montreal-based platform company, not a robot manufacturer. MachineAgent turns plain-language prompts into cell layouts and programs, and it sits beside a MachineMotion AI Controller built on NVIDIA Jetson and Isaac. The booth demos run on Universal Robots UR3, UR12e and UR20 arms and a FANUC LR Mate and CRX-10iA. As the desk’s story put it, nothing there is a new robot.

Hirebotics did the same with accessories: conveyor line tracking for its Cobot Painter, which is built on a FANUC CRX-10iA/L Paint arm and taught through Hirebotics’ own Beacon software, and a modular linear rail sold in 5-foot increments or custom lengths. Neither announcement introduces new robot hardware.

Dürr’s EcoRS Generation 2 sealing robots show the same instinct inside the arm. The four models span 20 to 150 kg of payload and up to 3,100 mm of reach, with the motors for axes 3 through 6 and the cabling moved inside the arm to cut its external bulk and ease cleaning. One caveat belongs here: Dürr’s release, dated September 14, never mentions IMTS, so it fits this week’s theme but is not a show launch. The pattern holds across the three: Vention is not a robot manufacturer, the desk’s story calls Dürr an integrator rather than a conventional robot brand, and Hirebotics builds on a FANUC arm.

How each number was labeled

This week the labels sat inside product announcements, and they were not uniform.

Three figures are company-stated and unaudited. Vention’s “up to 99% first-pick success rates” comes from a UR12e bin-picking demo configuration and has not been independently reproduced. UR’s claim that the CB7 Core delivers “40% more compute power in a 30% smaller footprint” is a comparison against UR’s own previous controller, not an independent benchmark. Exotec and GXO’s 40,000 to 70,000 pieces a day, with peaks of up to 2,200 order lines an hour, are the companies’ own operational figures, and the desk’s Exotec and GXO Venlo story says they have not been audited by a third party.

The certifications differ in kind. UR states that all g-Series robots are TÜV certified to ISO 10218-1 and UL 1740, so a named third party stands behind those marks. Its statement that Teradyne Robotics is certified to IEC 62443-4-1 ML3 for cybersecurity names no certifier in any of the five sources the desk reviewed, so it stays company-stated until one is named.

Agility’s label is written into its own release. The more than $300 million in multi-year Digit 5 orders is “subject to satisfaction of certain contractual milestones” as of May 2026, and the Digit 5 story sets it next to the $1.8 million in 2025 net sales that the company’s SEC Form S-4 discloses, a gap first examined in the desk’s S-4 going-concern analysis.

Live versus announced

One of the six stories describes a system already running. GXO and Exotec’s Venlo site now runs Guess’s EMEA and Asia fashion fulfillment on 127 Skypod robots across 60,000 rack locations, feeding 8 goods-to-person stations over roughly 200 meters of conveyor. Those are site totals from the September 15 announcement. Skypod’s up-to-30 kg payload, 4 m/s speed and 14-meter racks come from Exotec’s general product page and describe the platform as a category, not the Venlo build, whose robot speed and rack height have not been disclosed.

Everything else is on a schedule or has none.

  • Digit 5: early access in the first half of 2027 and general availability by the end of 2027. Its operating basis is Digit 4, which Agility says has logged more than 65,000 hours at customer sites, plus a 100,000-tote milestone at roughly 98% accuracy at GXO’s Flowery Branch facility. Both are company-reported.
  • UR Gen 7: none of the five sources reviewed gives pricing or a general-availability date, although working g-Series units were on the show floor.
  • Hirebotics’ rail: available now, but with manual positioning only. Beacon-guided position verification is planned next, and automated positioning by the end of 2026.
  • Dürr’s EcoRS Generation 2: the desk’s story lists a named customer paint-shop order or installation as something still to watch for.
  • Vention’s MachineAgent: debuted this week, and its “up to 99% first-pick” figure remains a company demo claim, not an independently tested result.

The standards gap

The cobot side of the week could point to third-party marks under existing standards, as UR’s TÜV attribution shows. The humanoid side cannot yet. Agility calls Digit 5 “cooperatively safe” and says Digit passed an independent field evaluation on a customer production line for industrial safety standards administered by OSHA. The Digit 5 story reads that precisely: an OSHA field evaluation checks compliance with workplace safety regulations at a specific site, it is not a robot collaborative-safety standards certification, and Agility’s materials do not describe it as one. No ISO 10218-2:2025 or ISO/TS 15066 certification appears in the announcement.

Agility says it is a project leader and active contributor to ANSI/A3 TR R15.108 and ISO 25785-1. Both are still under development, so the standard that would let a third party certify “cooperatively safe” for a humanoid does not fully exist yet, and Agility is helping write it.

No. The three new g-Series arms (10, 17 and 18 kg payload) join the e-Series and UR Series lineup, the CB7 Core controller is built to run the existing arms too, and the UR30 at 35 kg remains UR's heaviest cobot.
